Frosh/Soph City Championships Recap

The team arrived at the meet eager to compete and excited about their chances.
The Sophs continued their winning ways, taking the team title.  Led by wins from
Pat Murphy (3200 - 10:11.26 & anchor of the 4X800 team), Mike Mastanduno
( Long Jump - 21' 4 1/2" & 100m dash 11.62) and Bentley Whitfield (Discus - 115' 2").

Bentley out-threw his nearest competitor by more than 3 1/2 feet!!
He also placed 2nd in the Shot Put with a toss of 41' 7".
Mike out-distanced his closest competitor in the long jump by nearly 2 feet!
Pat Murphy toyed with the heads of his 2 competitors in both of his races,
allowing them to either hang on him or slightly lead until the last lap
when he showed them his heels.
In the 4X800, Brandon Keaney closed a fairly large gap to enable Pat to bring home the victory.

In the first event of the day, Ken Walshak & Jared Sassone-McHugh placed 2nd & 4th respectively.  While Ken led most of the race, he couldn't hold off a late charge by the first place finisher.

Nick Brennan ran a smart, well paced 3200 (10:39.66) to bring home 3rd place honors
and led off the victorious 4X800m relay team.

Paul McKenzie garnered a 4th place medal in the 100m dash ( 12.2 )

Pat Basil (Discus - 101' 3") and Kyle Black (High Jump - 5' 6") both earned 5th place hardware.

Now on to the Freshmen...
The team took home 5th place team honors.
The day started out on a high note with Thomas Flynn taking the gold in the 2K steeple
(7:03.39) in his first time competing in that event.
But the true story of the day and the athlete that had the entire crowd buzzing was
Warner Cooley, who scared the field with his athletic prowess.  Warner easily won the
Frosh 100m dash (11.63) and then electrified the crowd with an amazing, come-from-behind
victory anchoring the 4X400m relay team.  Warner made up about a 50 meter deficit to
take the win, in the process, running a 50.2 for 400 meters
(a time that is considered quite good, even by Varsity standards).
Warner was given co-MVP honors for the freshmen based on his amazing day.

The only other individual scorer was Nick Mazzucca taking 5th in the 1600m run (5:01.19).
Two of the relay teams took 2nd place honors, the 4X800 team of Thomas Flynn, Matt Fortino, Nick Mazzucca & Tim Fiola (9:06.62) and the 4X400 team of Tim Fiola, Tony Yacenda, Payton Hazzard & Warner Cooley.

The 4X100 team of Austen Verhulst, Tony Yacenda, Mark Vaeth & Payton Hazzard placed 4th.

As I stated on the main page, this meet marks the end of competition for many of the Freshmen & Sophomores for this season.  I hope all of you have a great summer & watch this site for updates to the practice schedule and the summer Captain's Practices.
